A famous ex-slave who fled his master in Virginia to find a home in Elmira, which became an integral part of the Underground Railroad--in which Jones became quite active. Jone's house still stands erect in Elmira and is now called the John W. Jones Museum.

John Jay Homestead State Historic Site is both a local gem and national treasure.
