Polk was president of the United States; the Mexican War was in the making and the rails of the Erie Railroad had been in use but two years when on August 23, 1845 a few residents of this agricultural community met together and organized a bank to provide for the financial needs of the growing hamlet.

The self-guided tour of the Museum begins in the Contemporary Glass Gallery and continues through the Glass Collection Galleries, showcasing more than 3,500 years of glass. It continues on to the Glass Innovation Center, which offers an interactive look at the way new discoveries in glass have changed the world. The tour includes the Hot Glass Show, a live narrated demonstration of hot glassblowing offered all day, everyday.
