Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum
Darlington, South Carolina
Description

The Darlington County Historical Commission was created by the South Carolina Legislature in 1965, for the purpose of serving as the county governmental archive, procuring general historical records relating to local history, and the marking historic sites.

From that humble beginning, we have grown into a substantial archive representing the Pee Dee region of SC. Our primary holdings relate directly to Darlington County with collateral holdings referencing Chesterfield, Florence, Marlboro and Williamsburg Counties. The collection volume is in excess 5,500 linear feet of documents.

The Grand Gallery gives visitors the opportunity to explore more than 14,000 years of local history. Our exhibits reflect our history from our area’s earliest inhabitants through the events of the 20th century. We feature fascinating artifacts, surprising information, and key historical facts. The exhibits also highlight the area’s military history, sports heroes, decorative arts, people and more.

Mission

We work to preserve, protect, and promote our rich Darlington County history.

History

The museum is dedicated to the memory of Carolyn “Bet” Norment Phillips, who at her death, bequeathed $4 million dollars to create a place where local citizens could immerse themselves in their history.
